I am off to Otakon as of tomorrow morning! Wish me luck!

*winded* [Jul. 14th, 2009|09:51 pm]
I'm making my final preparations for Otakon. I'll have to re-do all my packing now that I've washed my clothes, and carefully arrange my amigurumi that I'm hoping to enter in the art show so they don't get squashed or things don't break.

Oh, I finished another amigurumi: Cait Sith. I've had this one planned for a while, but seeing as he's a tuxedo cat I was wracking my brain to try and figure out how to make the white patches on him. I finally decided on felt, and decided to base the design around when I made Mr. Mew last fall. I designed him based on the more cartoony FF7 version.

The crown I made last night out of gold glitter Fimo, and he's got a sticky back felt face, thin plastic beading cord whiskers, and has a velveteen cape. I'm hoping to transcribe the pattern of him (and of Shaymin) tomorrow so I can make little "Get the pattern here" cards and point them to my site (although I probably should be pointing them to my DeviantArt account.)

My mom called about 10 minutes ago. The reason: Her brother died. He had been doing work and fell.

They're trying to contact my cousin, and it's times like this that (1) I wish he had Internet and (2) he didn't have the same exact goddamn name as an NHL player.

My uncle had his issues, but...damn. He had just gotten his license back from the state of New Hampshire. At least he was working when it happened.

I guess I'm too shocked to cry right now.

I've been bitten by the creative bug again, so I picked up my crochet hook and came up with...Shaymin.

Background Info: Shaymin is Pokemon #492, and is a legendary, which means it's VERY special. And it's also extremely adorable. It comes in two formes (sic), the hedgehog-like Land Forme and the canine-like Sky Forme (you can only get it in Pokemon Platinum.)

I'm about 95% satisfied. Its body is a little bit too long, and next time if I make another one it'll be about 5 rows shorter so it'll have the same roundness.

I've joined deviantART so I can showcase a lot of my art related stuff. Right now I'm just putting a few things up, but soon I'll be putting up all my amigurumi, kamishibai, gothloli and manga related stuff on there. If you want to visit, the address is http://chuchubucket.deviantart.com.

Congratulations, Becky, you are now the owner of a [BLEEP]ton of sewing patterns. [May. 9th, 2009|11:41 am]
At a massive yard sale today, there was a massive plastic tub of sewing patterns. They wanted $3, and I considered it sold.

Except when I got home to discover they're all patterns for little girls. Okay, that's a problem.

There's the potential for some of these to be loliable if I were to make MAJOR alterations, but...seriously, though, I think I'm going to donate most of the lot of these, save a few to experiment on, put some on Ebay (anyone want some Power Ranger costume patterns?) and keep the tub. Hey, it's a nice tub--I can use it.

EDIT: Luckily our church has a yard sale over Memorial Day weekend so I just shoved the ones I didn't want in a box and dropped them off there. Let's hope someone there will be salivating over them.

And the tote's being used for holiday decor.

Typical Yard Sale Day Haul [Apr. 25th, 2009|06:16 pm]
- Six sewing patterns (some from the 60s, woo!)
- Copy of a bridal sewing book
- Copy of Silent Hill 2 for PC (I found it at a church rummage sale. Go figure.)
- A Hello Kitty plush keychain
- A sundress
- Elastic insertion guides
- Three types of lace

There WAS a custom built computer I saw at one house. It had been purchased for like $3k in 2002, but I was wary of buying it since there was no documentation or anything. They wanted $25 for it...but seriously, do you see me with a clear Lucite case?

I felt like the dad from A Christmas Story all week [Mar. 26th, 2009|08:37 pm]
FRA-GEE-LAY!

I got my prize from Tokyopop for the Gothic & Lolita Bible...it's a necklace! It's a little bronze crown with "Innocent World" and a red velvet insert on a bronze chain.

CAR GET! [Mar. 11th, 2009|11:04 pm]
This past weekend while doing research I looked up Woburn Foreign Motors. I remember that place really well since it's visible from 128 and my dad got his car there WAY back when (1987 so I would've been in kindergarten) and found a couple of likely candidates on there. Two Hyundais, both less than 3 years old, both less than $10k and with a reasonable monthly payment over 48 months. Told Mom about them Sunday, asked to go there Monday night. Except it snowed Monday night. Tuesday night was dinner out, so we went tonight. Both had been sold.
BUT. This past weekend I was at a Ford dealership and I tried out a couple of the Focus models which I found were pretty good. Heck, at this point, anything's better than a '97 Elantra with a radio that doesn't work, scratches all over and a few dents on the passenger door from when my mom decided to be kind one morning and backed my car into the place where I usually parked, and did I mention that it had been only about 25 degrees and I was trying to get out of a freaking ICE PIT.
At that dealership was a black 07 Ford Focus for under $10k, and with 35k miles on it. We drove it around the parking lot a bit, inspected it, and I decided that this would be the one. I managed to talk them into giving me $625 on my trade in after they offered me $500 and I countered with the dealership this past weekend giving me $750. So I have to get the money for the deposit transferred into my checking account, take down the title to the Elantra, call the insurance company and get everything prepared to possibly switch banks to get a lower loan rate. (And it turns out that it was one of the ones I saw on the web site and noted that I was interested in.)

It's going to be a major committment, and I'll probably have to eat PB&J for lunch instead of Lean Cuisines, but sooner rather than later. I'm kinda excited but really tired now. Hopefully tomorrow it should all sink in.

Car Search [Mar. 8th, 2009|05:09 pm]
I have begun searching for a car. The thing is though, I'm buying USED. On my salary, I don't think I can afford new, especially if it's going to take 5 years to pay off.

My mom rode in the car with me, willingly, for the first time in 10 years yesterday. We went to a Hyundai dealership and tried things out. They were really interested on pushing a 2008 onto us, but it would still have been a bit much. (They even called me when I was in Kohls and encouraged me to come back in.)
Then today we went to Drum Hill and tested a Ford Focus. I haven't driven a Ford since those first days when Mom took me and the Taurus to the parking lot of Shawsheen Tech and had me drive. It wasn't bad. I tried a 2008 and a 2007. The 2008 was impressive but out of our range, and there were some quirky things with the '07 that somewhat turned me off.

Last night and today I did research online, so we'll be headed to Woburn Foreign Motors tomorrow night armed with some of the printouts I have of two Elantras that will (hopefully!) be there. They're both under $10k and they are both under 50k miles, one's a 2006 and one's a 2007 so I'm hoping to get a good deal on either.

For all my readers: Do you drive a Ford Focus and how do you like it?

I've gotten a new phone! Just to let y'all know, in case you DO have my number, I've left Verizon for AT&T, since I have crap reception with Verizon in the apartment (For those of you with Verizon it means that you'd be using up minutes if you called me.) However, I DID add on 200 txts a month to my bill. The phone is an LG, it's rather slim, I slipped a 2GB microSD card in there (holy crap, those things are TINY, and I thought that an XD card for my Fujifilm digital camera from 2003 was small) and it's PLUM PURPLE! Oh, and my ringtone is currently Hare Hare Yukai, JUST BECAUSE.

Oh, and other stuff I did today:
- Got Shaymin from Toys R Us (Yes, I'm still into Pokemon. Yes, it's A HEDGEHOG BUT ITS GRASS AND FLOWERS INSTEAD OF QUILLS. Yes, I WANT ONE.)
- Scoured 3 grocery stores before finding MANGOS: A CAN OF FRUIT
- Made Mango Pudding and Pork Shougayaki using Personal Trainer Cooking (both came out AWESOME)
- Ate the rest of the mangos

The Quest For G [Feb. 7th, 2009|03:41 pm]
I'm a big fan of Monty Python and I saw one of the The Quest for G commercials on the other night when I was watching the Celtics. And I'm like, "Holy crap. That was really good."

Imagine, if you will, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but with all the major characters replaced by sports figures (like Kevin Garnett from the Celtics and Derek Jeter who I wish was Sir Not Appearing In This Commercial) on a quest to find the Holy G. It was a fun little tribute with a few digs here and there (like Usain Bolt's ego.) They kept it fairly true to the original, but as fairly true as you can get for a series of 3 minute commercials.

Probably should update this thing more often...Anyways. Last weekend was Arisia, and I went and stayed overnight at the hotel with my parents. I'm pleased and happy to say that they have learned from their previous attempts to hold a convention at that hotel (EXCEPT for the damn Masquerade venue) and I had a really good time.

It was capped off with my first entry in the masquerade. In hindsight I should've prepared something rather than just walked on because not many people know what Classic Lolita is. (great, now what is everyone going to think of me at Boskone this year...) I entered this ruby red dress with black ribbon and lace trim and the black rose-trimmed top hat. I had the workmanship judge see the dress and I won honorable mention...and two hall costume ribbons!

And speaking of winning, I entered a "Submit 25 words or less" contest that Tokyopop was holding in the 4th Gothic & Lolita Bible, and I was chosen as one of the winners, which means I will soon be sent some goods from Innocent World, which is one of the "classic Lolita" lines (I LOVE their style.) With my luck, though, I'll have probably won the $25 teddy bear hair pin.

There's only one direction it can go from here [Jan. 5th, 2009|09:06 pm]
This weekend I got the car inspected. Of course I didn't realize they left the lights on and I didn't get to turn them off until a neighbor came to my door and said they were still on six hours later. I though, Not too bad...
Sunday morning I started up the car and it was obviously in its death throes. I called [info]dblisle and asked him to come over until I saw another neighbor. I asked him if he could help, and he said he could. As he was making the necessary connections I couldn't help but think, "Isn't the black cable on the dead battery supposed to be grounded?" But I didn't voice my concerns.

SIX HOURS LATER
Car battery that I had to replace even though I got one this summer - $109
100 amp fuse - some small amount which involved one of the guys going to pick it up
Parts & labor - some other amount
TOTAL: over $170

On top of all that, I had to buy a portable radio since mine now no longer works, and I don't know if it's going to be worth the trouble to shove the thing out, fix a fuse then shove it back in for another, oh, hundred bucks or so.

ON TOP OF ALL THAT, I didn't realize that Another Anime Convention was having a yomise in Londonderry on Saturday. NOOOOOOOO!!!!

(but I did get Lucky Star volume 5.)

Merry Christmas [Dec. 24th, 2008|08:44 pm]
Currently camped out w/the 'rents. We're headed to Mohegan Sun tomorrow for an overnight. I haven't stayed there before. (Yeah, kinda sacrilegious, but...)

It's A Wonderful Life is on. I infinitely prefer that movie to A Christmas Story.

We had presents tonight rather than tomorrow since we'll be on the road. I got what I wanted: a terrycloth bathrobe and a flatscreen TV. I also got some very nice outerwear, a Liz Claiborne shirt and a Bass fleece sweatshirt.

My mom was VERY pleased with what I got her. And my dad was pleased as well. I'm pleased.

They let us out early from work (2:15) because of all the snow. ("What snow?" I say as I glance out the window and see there's barely a dusting.)

One good thing did happen: I had my birthday cake 3 days early. Since my boss and one of my co-workers weren't going to be around Monday they presented it to me today and I was NOT expecting it. I saw everyone milling around, then they started singing, and I thought, "Wait, today's not JoJo's birthday--OH SNAP." It was a pretty good cake, too.

So I got what I wanted for my birthday--and early, even!

What I Did All Weekend [Dec. 15th, 2008|08:58 pm]

I never did find out what 2-2-3 and 2-2-2 meant. But who cares.
